From on Feb. 9 2016, Walmart customers in Canada will be have to pay five cents for each plastic bags when they checkout, with reusable bags available for a price of 25 cents each bag. Walmart said this policy already in other countries has reduce the half of plastic bags consumed by the supermarket.
Walmart Canada will begin to ask customers to pay for plastic bags as part of the company’s strategy for reduceing the use of plastic that ends up in landfills. Starting on Feb. 9, customers will be charged five cents each for plastic bags. They can also choose to pay 25 cents for a reusable bag at the counter.
Walmart offical says most of the proceeds from the new charge will be used for supporting recycling initiatives for shopping bags and other thin plastic objects. The company said it’s also going to improve in-store recycling and collection programs and work with suppliers to find ways of removing thin plastic bags from its packaging. Walmart Canada has 397 branches and serves more than one million customers every day.
